Buzzing or Popping Circuit Breaker? Warning Signs You Shouldn't Ignore

A buzzing or popping circuit breaker should never be ignored.

On this service call, the homeowner reported a buzzing and popping sound coming from a breaker that raised immediate concerns about a possible electrical hazard. Upon arrival, one particular breaker was clearly identified as the source of the problem. Once safely removed, significant heat damage and burning caused by electrical arcing were discovered beneath the breaker. The bus bars of the electrical panel were cleared of debris and thoroughly inspected for damage. The homeowner’s quick action likely helped prevent much more extensive damage to the electrical panel.

A buzzing, popping, or crackling circuit breaker can be a warning sign of loose electrical connections, overheating, electrical arcing, or an internally failing breaker. In many cases, the electrical system may still appear to be functioning normally, which causes homeowners to delay calling for help. Unfortunately, these types of problems often worsen over time and rarely improve on their own. In some situations, they can progress into damaged equipment, loss of power, or even an electrical fire hazard.

In this particular case, the buzzing was loud and obvious. It was easily noticeable and clearly indicated that something was wrong. However, more often than not, electrical arcing can be faint and easily overlooked, especially if no other warning signs are present such as flickering lights, intermittent power issues, or a light burning smell that may come and go.

During this service call, several additional issues were also discovered and corrected that were unrelated to the arcing breaker itself, but could have easily become future problems. Loose electrical connections were found at multiple breakers, a worn breaker with a damaged casing was replaced, several neutral and equipment grounding conductors were tightened, and four breakers were found to be improperly seated, preventing the panel cover from closing correctly. Correcting these issues also allowed the missing panel cover screw to be properly reinstalled. Many homeowners are surprised to learn that the panel cover helps retain breakers in place and should always be properly secured.

One of the most important things to understand is that unusual electrical sounds should never be ignored. A buzzing breaker may start quietly and intermittently before becoming more obvious. You may also experience buzzing or popping sounds caused by electrical arcing elsewhere in your electrical system, including outlets, light fixtures, switches, disconnects, or even appliances. Even when symptoms seem minor, they can point to a much more serious issue hidden beneath the surface.

If you notice a buzzing or popping circuit breaker, it is best to act quickly. If it is safe to do so, begin by switching off the breaker you suspect may be causing the noise. If the sound continues and the source is unclear, continue turning breakers off one at a time until the buzzing stops. If all breakers in the panel have been turned off and the buzzing or popping persists, locate the disconnect for that panel and switch it off if it is safe to do so. Once the issue has been isolated, contact a licensed electrician to inspect the problem and determine the cause. Continuing to operate a breaker or other electrical component that may be overheating or arcing can create a much larger safety concern and potentially lead to extensive damage.

This video shows the buzzing breaker, the hidden heat damage discovered after removal, and the repair process used to safely restore the electrical system. Problems like these are exactly why unusual sounds coming from your electrical system should always be taken seriously.
