Honda VFR 800 Crossrunner is a Solid Touring Bike with Modern Tech and Bulletproof Engine!

My friend recently bought a new motorcycle. And this is the Honda VFR Crossrunner! Stay tuned for my review.

First thing I notice is the riding position. My feet are bent like on a racing motorcycle. At the same time the handlebars are wide and curved at the ends like on a touring and adventure bike. It seems that they are even wider than the Africa Twin handlebars. Also they are very high and it took me like half an hour to get used to this riding position. I don’t know how it will be for longer rides but it is very strange for now. The seat is adjustable and currently it is set at its lowest position. For city riding and for my height this was a good thing because it allows me to quickly extend my legs to the ground and be very stable. My only complaint about the seat that it is a bit hard and for my short ride I already felt my gluteus Maximus becoming numb.

Let’s talk about the suspension of the VFR. There are several things that I really like in this bike and the suspension is one of them. It smooths out the small bumps and uneven surfaces but on the other hand it is not too soft. This suspension makes the bike handle really well. At 240 kgs the VFR feels very light and nimble. My Africa Twin weighs the same but it feels more heavier and harder to tame. Maybe the reason is that the Africa Twin is a top heavy bike. The VFR however feels very different.

The wheels on the front and on the back are both 17” and are more close to the sport touring siblings of this bike. It also gives the bike some supermoto vibes and looks and it is a bit deceptive. I’m also impressed by the MICSHELIN Pilot road 5.

Brakes are solid with 3 rotor pads on the front and two on the back. They have ABS and are linked. This means that when you squeeze the front brake lever it pushes 2 of the front rotors and one on the back.

But let’s talk about this engine. It is one of the best motors that came from Honda. With slight modifications it was used in many Honda models. It has 100 ponies and good power delivery. It revs like a sport bike up until 12 thousand RPM. However for normal riding you will rarely need more than 6. Still if you need the power and carry a lot of luggage and a passenger this engine will get no sweat. It has variable timing and programmable fuel injection. Some riders complain that it is a bit thirsty but it all depends on how you are pushing it. At higher revs the valves open a lot more and you may get poor mileage. However in a recent trip to Greece my friend reported around 4.5 litres per 100 km which is 1 litre less than my Africa Twin used to do.

Speaking of my Africa. I no longer have this motorcycle. The clutch cassette broke and I sold it to a guy that still repairs the engine. However if you want to see my review of the Africa please visit my channel and check it out.

After this shameless plug let’s finish with the VFR. I really like this bike. It is a bit tamer than the previous sport touring version from 1998 but it is also with a very different purpose. It should appeal for those that want a stable bullet proof motorcycle with proven engine that will last decades. I have another friend with the 98 model from the last century but this motorcycle is still running perfectly. Just change oils tires and you are good to go for another year.
