The A1E1 Independent, the Five-Turret Monster That Predicted the Wrong Future

The A1E1 Independent is one of the strangest tanks ever built — a 1920s British “land battleship” covered in FIVE turrets and designed to fight enemies in every direction at once.
Built between the wars, this giant experimental machine helped influence tank development across Europe and even inspired later designs like the Soviet T-35. It even had a machine-gun turret capable of anti-aircraft fire. Because apparently one turret simply wasn’t enough.
The idea looked brilliant on paper… but in reality? Multi-turret tanks turned out to be heavy, complicated, and an absolute nightmare to coordinate. Still, you can’t deny the A1E1 looks incredible.
