Pus in the foot

This is a short video showing a couple of very different cases of "pus in the foot". This condition is very common and it can be simple to diagnose and treat, but in some cases it can be really challenging for vets, owners and farriers. Pus in the foot (or a foot abscess) usually begins with a bruise to the sole or a small penetrating injury of the sole (by a stone, for example) which then becomes infected with bacteria. As the bacteria multiply beneath the sole, pressure builds up and it can become extremely painful for horses. The aim of treatment is to identify the area of pain and then establish good drainage of the abscess through the sole by paring a hole in the sole with a hoof knife. Poulticing will then draw out any remaining pus so that the sole can heal itself. However, as this video shows, sometimes finding the site of an abscess can be difficult and a long period of poulticing may be required to eventually encourage the abscess to burst out.
