Ram-Type BOP Educational Model (CAD + 3D Printing)

This project showcases the complete CAD reconstruction and functional cutaway model of a ram-type Blowout Preventer (BOP), engineered in 2018 to enhance well-control training. During that year, our team developed a fully detailed mechanical model that helped instructors explain critical safety concepts with clarity and precision.

The challenge was to build a hyper-accurate educational model that reveals internal behavior normally hidden inside a BOP. We digitally recreated every internal mechanism—ram blocks, piston actuation systems, guides, bore geometry, and sealing interfaces—based on industry specifications. The entire mechanism was validated through tolerance analysis and simulated motion studies to ensure instructional accuracy.

Once the assembly was finalized, we fabricated the model using multi-material FDM 3D printing. Each subsystem was color-coded to visually differentiate functions and help instructors demonstrate step-by-step operational sequences. The result is a durable, classroom-ready training tool now used in well-control programs to explain shear, pipe-ram, and sealing mechanics in a clear and intuitive way.

This companion model complements the annular BOP system and gives students a complete view of how pressure-control equipment works together during drilling operations.
