“We Call Them Moon Children” #why

Source: @ahmedzainoun

Children with xeroderma pigmentosum (XP) often live nocturnal lives because their bodies can’t repair the damage caused by UV radiation. Even minimal sun exposure can lead to severe sunburn, eye damage, and a dramatically increased risk of skin cancer — sometimes in early childhood.

To stay safe, many children with XP avoid daylight entirely, going outside only after sunset. Their homes and schools may be fitted with UV-blocking film, and if they do go out during the day, they must wear protective clothing, visors, and sunscreen with extreme care. It’s a life of constant vigilance — not because of a choice, but because sunlight itself is dangerous. For these children, night becomes the safest time to experience the outside world.
