Speaking at a recent event, Google CEO Sundar Pichai highlighted a significant milestone in the company’s global AI expansion and its deepening engagement with India.

Reflecting personally on his connection to the country, he recalled travelling by train through South India during his childhood, particularly mentioning the "beautiful" coastal city of Visakhapatnam (Vizag) as a core memory.

Now, decades later, Pichai expressed his elation at having the opportunity to call and speak with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to discuss Google’s most ambitious and largest AI investment outside the US in that very Indian city.

The tech giant's CEO announced a landmark commitment of $15 billion to establish a large-scale 1 gigawatt+ data center project in Vizag, powered predominantly by clean energy along with sub-sea cable infrastructure to improve connectivity and support transformative digital growth in the region.

He emphasized that such an investment aligns closely with the Modi’s vision of accelerating national development and expanding technological access across the country.

Characterizing the project as both exciting and impactful, he framed it as a way of giving back to India while propelling innovation in South Asia. The announcement underscored the importance of South India in the global technology landscape and its growing role in shaping the future of AI.
