Isham Jones Always In My Heart 1932 hifi
Isham Jones had been making phonograph records since 1920. First he was recording for Brunswick until June of 1932, in August of 1932 he started with Victor. This is his 8th record with the new company.
At the same time, new hifi recording equipment had been installed in the Victor recording studios in New York and in Camden, New Jersey. It seems like that only very few new record cutters, amplifiers and microphones were first available for this endeavor, perhaps only one of each at the respective locations. Most recording activities were carried out using the old equipment, some orchestras, however, were recorded in hifi. There is no rhyme or reason to the selection of the orchestras, it rather seems to be associated with the use of the studio that had the new equipment installed. Additionally, a lot of experimentation was going on during the first recording sessions, particularly the use of odd microphone combinations. In this particular recording, the microphone for the orchestra was a high quality hifi microphone, while the vocal microphone was mediocre, to say the least. Eddie Stone sounds like he is singing into a carbon grain microphone (which it most likely is..).
Nevertheless, this record again is among my most favorite. Listen to the cute lyrics, the great tuba (Isham Jones never abandoned it) and also the marvellous saxophone. And if you listen very, very carefully, at the beginning of the record, before the music starts, you can hear Isham tap out the rhythm...
