Uncharted: The Lost Legacy (The Movie)

This is the story of the game Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, edited into a movie. Chloe Frazer and Nadine Ross team up to search India for the lost Tusk of Ganesh. Nathan Drake's story may be over, but there are still more treasures to be found in the world of Uncharted. This movie was captured in 4K on a PS4 Pro.

If you are unfamiliar with my work, my goal is to bring the story of this game to a wider audience, and also bring a new experience to those who have played the game, by editing the story into a full length movie format. My process is focused on telling the story. This isn't a compilation of cutscenes, and this isn't a "Let's Play" or walkthrough. This is a movie. I typically include all cutscenes and I try to limit the amount of gameplay used to just that that is necessary to telling the story. The idea is to ensure the story can be understood and enjoyed by everyone, whether they've played the game or not. This means making sure any cuts I make don't cause plot holes or hurt character development. I also take care to direct the action while playing the game, whether that's by making sure my character slows down to take in the view when necessary, making sure my character efficiently keeps on path and doesn't make stupid mistakes or die, or taking the effort to control the camera for more cinematic effect whenever possible. This often requires extensive practice beforehand and multiple recordings of the same scene to get the best results.

Another step I usually take to make my movies feel more cinematic, and less like a game is to eliminate anything on screen that makes it painfully obvious you're watching a game. Whether this is things like on screen hud elements, gun reticles, button prompts, or chapter titles, I always try to remove as much of these as possible. Thankfully Naughty Dog has provided us with a "No HUD Mode" option which takes care of most of the work for me in this game, although that did not eliminate chapter titles or enemy highlighting. In some of my other projects, however, I've gone to the effort of producing hundreds of visual effects shots to remove these HUD elements. I'm very thankful to Naughty Dog for providing this option.

My next project will be Assassin's Creed Origins, which will also be produced in 4K, as well as Shadow of War after that. Producing this movie in 4K gave me a few challenges, as the recordings were quite large (326GB in total) to maintain a high quality for editing purposes. This required creating a temporary lower quality digital intermediate that I would edit with, and later replace, and learning how to best do this caused some extra delay in the project, as did learning what settings to best capture with. Thankfully because of the short post production cycle on this movie, production was still rather quick, and these improvements in my workflow will prove very useful on my next movies. After Shadow of War I can't say for sure what will be next. Horizon Zero Dawn is still in the plans at some point, as will be Batman: The Enemy Within. There are more games coming out in the next year that hold strong potential for being made into movies as well, but I will reserve judgement on whether to produce those or not until after I play the games, as usual.

As always, feel free to give me suggestions on future projects, or how to improve my editing skills or anything else you can think of. If you like my work, and want to support me, I have a Patreon at:
