Why Satellite Links Are So Difficult - Doppler, Beams & Distance Explained
This is Module 6 of my Satellite Communication System course, where we go deeper into the engineering challenges of satellite link design and compare them with terrestrial networks.
In terrestrial systems, communication happens over short distances, and many design challenges are relatively easier to manage. But in satellite systems, communication happens over distances ranging from hundreds to tens of thousands of kilometers, making link design significantly more complex.
In this module, we explore:
• Why distance and path loss are much higher in satellite systems
• Why increasing transmit power is not enough, and how narrow beams (EIRP) solve this
• How high frequency bands help in designing compact antenna arrays
• Why beamforming is easier in satellites than terrestrial networks
• What is Doppler effect and how it impacts satellite communication
• How GPS synchronization helps correct Doppler shift
• Why uplink is challenging and requires accurate satellite prediction
• How satellites connect to the internet using gateway stations
• How Inter-Satellite Links (ISL) improve system resilience
All concepts are explained using simple animations so that even non-technical viewers can understand.
