Breaking: EU Resolution On Uganda Elections outlines Tough Demands and Consequences for Museveni
European lawmakers have adopted a hard-hitting resolution condemning the conduct of Uganda’s 15 January 2026 elections and the crackdown that followed. The European Parliament did not mince words. In a resolution passed on 12 February 2026, members described the election period as being marred by intimidation, violence, severe restrictions on civic space, and even a nationwide internet blackout.
The resolution goes beyond general concern. It names individuals. It references arbitrary arrests, reports of torture, disappearances, and military trials for civilians. It speaks directly about the alleged siege of opposition leader Bobi Wine’s residence and reported assaults on his family and staff. It calls for the immediate release of political detainees, including Dr. Kizza Besigye, and demands an end to harassment, intimidation, and politically motivated prosecutions.
The Parliament is also urging institutional reforms — independence of the electoral commission and judiciary, restoration of civic space, and an end to internet shutdowns. More significantly, it calls for a review of EU cooperation with Uganda and opens the door for targeted sanctions against individuals linked to abuses.
While European Parliament resolutions are not binding law, they are powerful political signals. They shape diplomatic engagement, influence funding decisions, and increase international scrutiny. At a time when tensions inside Uganda remain high — with reports of home raids, detentions, denied habeas corpus applications, and continued pressure on opposition leaders — this resolution raises the stakes.
This is no longer just a domestic political debate. It has now entered the international arena.
