Stretching a canvas for oil and acrylic painting is an essential skill for any painter. Additionally, there are many other techniques for preparing a surface for oil and acrylic painting: stretching watercolor and printmaking paper, preparing wood and masonite, using clear gesso, acrylic gesso, rabbitskin glue, and oil primer, and many more. RISD Adjunct Professor Clara Lieu and Teaching Artist Alex Rowe walk you through every step of the several ways you can prepare a surface for oil and acrylic painting.
