Georgia House of Representatives Will Not Take Up Redistricting During Special Session #WABENews

BREAKING: Just one hour before Georgia’s special legislative session was set to begin, Republican House Speaker Jon Burns announced Wednesday that redistricting maps will not move forward during Georgia’s special legislative session, despite the issue being one of the primary reasons lawmakers were called back to the State Capitol.

Burns said redistricting should be addressed through a more deliberative process at a later date, effectively taking the issue off the table for the current special session. The decision marks a significant shift from expectations heading into the session, which was originally called in part to consider redrawing Georgia’s congressional and legislative district maps ahead of the 2028 election cycle.

Lawmakers are still expected to take up legislation related to property taxes and election procedures involving the use of QR codes in Georgia’s ballots.

WABE is at the Georgia State Capitol covering the special session and will continue to provide updates as developments unfold throughout the day.
