112 - How to Oxidizing Silver

This is a simple instructional video on how to oxidize silver. Generally this works best on Sterling silver (925) or fine silver (999).

It also works on copper.

This does not oxidize gold or brass.

The concept here is simple: By creating a heated solution of liver of sulfur, the silver naturally oxidizes (tarnishes) to its natural oxidized color, which is a dark grey.

Take note that it is impossible to oxidize to a true black. That is just not the nature of sterling silver.

Other products can be used to get black such as paint on patinas like Midas Black Background Antique, Jax Blackening agent, and others.

The other process I use to blacken jewelry is a black nano ceramic plating. But this is a whole other ball of wax.

I do have a video on ceramic plating here:

I do not recommend selling jewelry that has a 100% oxidized look. It does wear off over time. I like to add oxidizing, and then polish it off or all raised surfaces, and any surface that touches the skin.
