Introduction to Modes and Modal Vamps (and beyond!) for Jazzers - The Jazz Guitar Vlog

Here's a quick and neat way to go about learning modes.

Number 1: a mode is a scale

Number 2: a scale is a set (i.e. a collection) or notes

For instance, the C major scale = C D E F G A B (a.k.a. C Ionian mode)

IF you use the same notes and "start" on a different note (see the video for my analogy with the solar system), you get a different perspective on the same scale.

For instance, D Dorian = D E F G A B C ... they're the same 7 notes, but the "center of gravity" is now the note D.

The major scale thus have 7 distinct modes, with their own flavors.

Later on in the video I address:
-Intermediate players: how to create so-called modal vamps
-Advanced players: how to actually practice and internalize modes :)
