Lord Asano (Morio Kazama), the young ruler of the Ako clan, is appointed to receive imperial envoys - only to be subjected to relentless humiliation by the high-ranking official Kira (Hisaya Morishige). On March 14, 1701, his patience shatters, and Asano draws his blade in the castle’s forbidden "Corridor of Pines."

Despite the tradition of punishing both parties in a conflict, Shogun Tsunayoshi (Isao Natsuyagi) delivers a brutal, one-sided judgment: Asano is ordered to commit ritual suicide (seppuku) that very day, and his House is abolished. Receiving the tragic news, Chief Chamberlain Oishi Kuranosuke (Kotaro Satomi) calms his enraged warriors and seeks a peaceful path to restore their clan. But when all hope of justice is crushed, Oishi makes a final, fateful resolve to strike back. Then comes the night of December 14, 1702…
