Sandblast and Painting Utility Trailer from Camper
This video is part of a series where I'm making a utility trailer from a pop-up camper. In this video I sandblast the frame to remove rust and old paint. Then I prime and paint the frame. Finally I add a simple light kit.
Here you will see me use a sandblaster for the first time. It works very well. In 3 hours the trailer frame is stripped of rust and paint.
The sandblaster was a 40 pound model from Harbor Freight. I bought it used from Craigslist because the seller was including blasting medium, so it was a better package price.
Three air compressors had to run together to provide enough volume of air. These are small home-owner air-compressors because I don't own a big contractor air compressor. Surprisingly, all three air compressors ran on the Aims inverter. They ran continuously for the three hours it took to sandblast the frame. That Aims inverter is very impressive.
Next I use a leaf-blower to remove any sand hiding in corners.
To prime this trailer frame I am using Corroseal Rust Converter Primer. I did this because there was still some light rust on the frame. However, I have found that the Corroseal needs more rust to do it's job. So, next time, I will buy regular metal primer.
After two coats of primer I applied a finish coat of paint from rattle-cans. I used Rust-Oleum brand Professional High Performance Enamel Gloss Black. This was in 15 oz. spray cans.
The trailer is light enough that I was able to flip the frame by myself; this allowed me to sandblast and paint all surfaces.
Once the paint dried I installed an LED light kit from amazon. The lights were easy to install and bright.
In an upcoming video I will be installing a deck on the trailer from used pressure-treated lumber.
