India Cracks Down on Weight Loss Drug Ads | Eliquis Found Safer Than Xarelto for Blood Clots

India’s drug regulator, the Central Drugs Standard Control Organization (CDSCO), has issued a new advisory warning pharmaceutical companies against direct or indirect advertising of prescription weight-loss drugs, especially GLP-1 receptor agonists.

The regulator cautioned that promoting obesity medicines through social media campaigns, influencers, or disease-awareness promotions that indirectly advertise drugs could violate India’s drug promotion regulations.

At the same time, a major international clinical trial published in the New England Journal of Medicine compared two widely used blood-thinning medicines, Eliquis (apixaban) and Xarelto (rivaroxaban), for the treatment of venous thromboembolism (deep blood clots).

The study included around 2,760 patients with deep vein thrombosis or pulmonary embolism. Researchers found that patients treated with Eliquis experienced significantly fewer bleeding events compared with those receiving Xarelto, while both drugs were similarly effective in preventing recurrent blood clots.

These developments highlight two important trends in the healthcare sector:
• Stronger regulatory oversight of drug marketing
• Continuous clinical research to improve patient safety in anticoagulant therapy.

Watch this video to understand the full details of the CDSCO advisory and the latest Eliquis vs Xarelto study.
