E-invoicing under GST is mandatory for businesses with an aggregate annual turnover exceeding Rs. 5 crore in any preceding financial year Starting from 2017-18 onwards to 2025-26.
It applies to B2B supplies, exports, and supplies to SEZ units, requiring generation of a unique Invoice Reference Number (IRN) from the IRP portal.
Key Aspects of E-Invoice Applicability
Turnover Threshold: Businesses with an Annual Aggregate Turnover (AATO) over ₹5 crore are required to generate e-invoices, effective from August 1, 2023.
Transactions Covered: Mandatory for B2B (Business-to-Business) transactions, exports, B2B supplies to SEZ units, and credit/debit notes.
Mandatory Generation: Invoices must be uploaded to the Invoice Registration Portal (IRP) to obtain a unique Invoice Reference Number (IRN) and a QR code.
Non-Applicability/Exemptions:
----------------------------------------------------
B2C (Business-to-Consumer) transactions.
Exempted or nil-rated supplies.
Supplies under Reverse Charge Mechanism (RCM).
Specific sectors:
---------------------------------

Consequences of Non-Compliance:
-----------------------------------------------------------
Invoices issued without a valid IRN or IRP by a Seller person are not treated as valid tax invoice which leads to penalties and denied Input Tax Credit (ITC).
Entities Exempt from E-invoicing
-------------------------------------------------------------
Certain entities are exempt from generating e-invoices, even if they meet the turnover criteria:
