Heat and Work Equivalence

The first law of thermodynamics also provides an interesting connection between work and heat. A system of particles or a body can store internal energy. Internal energy is a kind of potential energy in the form of atomic and molecular motions and their interactions. This energy, which is like an atomic potential energy, can be extracted and converted into work. The first law says that changes to the internal energy of a system, whether adding energy or removing energy from it, are done by adding either work or heat to the system. It actually doesn’t matter which type of energy, heat or work, does the energy transfer. Either one can alter the internal energy of the system in the same way. So although work and heat have some structural differences in the kind of energy they represent, they are fundamentally equivalent.
