Young boy pancakes cast net while castnet fishing for mullet in Florida

Charlie is a very small boy. But to many professional fisherman in Florida, he's such a giant with the way he throws big cast nets. Charlie likes pancakes. No, not the breakfast kind.

Charlie's father says he is a very smart kid who excels in academics.

Father and son enjoy the same hobby: castnetting for mullet.

On a cold day on Nov. 20, Charlie and his father could be seen under a bridge hunting giant schools of mullet.

Charlie's older brother says they all caught dozens of extra-large mullet, mostly loaded with roe, the previous night before this video was taken.

That night they hit what is called a mullet run -- that's when hundreds of thousands or sometimes millions of mullet gather in big schools as they run away from cold weather and go for the flats or shallow water.

Charlie's father said the young boy began launching big cast nets when Charlie was merely 4 years old. Charlie's father makes his own cast nets, not for resale, but just for himself and his children.

In this video, Charlie could be seen throwing a homemade cast net. Unlike common commercial nets, his cast net has chains instead of lead weights.

It makes sense to use chains, like they do in Japan and South America, Charlie's father said, because the chains run all over the leadline, unlike when one uses cigar-type or round lead that necessitate having spaces in between. Those extra spaces would make the net sink slower because the lead line is made of rope that floats, slowing down the sinking process and allowing the fish to escape.

Charlie enjoys hunting for mullet.

He is a giant.
