By the age of seven Birju Maharaj had already made his first public performance, demonstrating exceptional talent and a profound understanding of the art form. After his father died, when Birju Maharaj was nine years old, his training continued with his uncles, dance masters Shambhu Maharaj and Lacchu Maharaj.

Recorded in 2015, this two-part interview is a tribute to Maharaj ji’s legacy. In the first part, he shares profound insights on Kathak, its cultural importance, guidance for the younger generation, and his memorable work in cinema.
