Mediterranean turtles
This group includes Testudo graeca (Moorish tortoise), Testudo hermanni (Greek tortoise) and Testudo marginata (helmeted tortoise). The group is very complex, with a large number of different geographical variants, subspecies and doubtful cases. The Testudo graeca group is the most diverse, even experts are difficult to classify them. Up to four variants of the Testudo hermanni can even be distinguished, the status of the Testudo hermanni has also been doubted. Based on its geographical origin, the Spurr-tighed Tortoise can be divided into two groups:
The North African group
Moorish tortoises can be found from southern Morocco to Libya, southern Spain and some Spanish islands. There are major differences between these cold-blooded animals. In some regions, the turtles hibernate, in other parts in summer sleep, and in some parts both occur.

The Asian and Middle Eastern group
This subgroup can be found all over Turkey, along the Black Sea and in various places in the Middle East. The Turkish variant is called Testudo iberia. The behavior of this variant generally resembles the North African counterparts, but the social behavior is very different. Turkish turtles are much more aggressive than their North African relatives, they bite and ram each other much more often.

Protection
Cites certification is required to keep the Spurr-tighed Tortoise.

Size
The body length varies from 20 to 25 cm.

Natural living environment
Open, step-like areas, many sunny and lightly shaded spots. Safe burrows in the ground to hide.

Food
Vegetable food such as leaves, all kinds of herbs and grass.

Activity
When they see the first rays of the sun, they look for a sunny warm place to sunbathe, where they can warm up for hours and then look for food and rest again. In the late afternoon they become more active again.

Behaviour
The turtle is curious and likes to climb stones and hills.
