Shedding Dead Skin off Eardrum & Ear Canal in Client with Otitis Externa - #449

Ear wax removal is necessary when ear wax build up becomes impacted. Symptoms causes by earwax blockage include: earache (otalgia), conductive hearing loss, blocked ear, vertigo, tinnitus, itchiness and irritation, occlusion etc.

The client attended with Otitis Externa in the right. This is a chronic condition for him, causing irritation and itchiness of the ear canal. In addition, the dead keratin often embeds on the eardrum itself leading to a hearing loss. Despite previous medical treatment, his Otitis Externa keeps resurfacing.

Remove dead keratin off the ear canal walls and eardrum can be very challenging. This is particularly true near the eardrum, where the bony medial ear canal wall is. The bony medial ear canal wall is literally composed of a thin layer of skin directly over the bony itself, without any fatty tissue in between, making it extremely sensitive and painful if direct contact is made. When removing dead keratin off the eardrum, the obvious risk of perforating it is always a possibility.

Nonetheless, I successfully managed to shed the dead keratin off both medial bony ear canal wall and eardrum. The keratin near the entrance of the lateral canal wall was extremely tough and scaley. I have referred the patient back to his GP to see if they can offer any alternative treatment for his Otitis Externa.
