The 5 Positions: I break down the five basic positions of the CAGED system for dominant 7th chords.

Inversions Across the Neck: Then, I show you how to shift these positions to create inversions of E7 (and other dominant 7th chords), unlocking a more complete understanding of the fretboard.

What is a Chord Inversion?

A chord inversion is when the notes of a chord are rearranged so that a note other than the root becomes the lowest note. For example, in an E7 chord:

The root position has E as the lowest note.

The 1st inversion places the 3rd (G#) as the lowest note.

The 2nd inversion places the 5th (B) as the lowest note.

The 3rd inversion places the 7th (D) as the lowest note.

In written music, chord inversions are often indicated as slash chords. For instance:

E7/G# means an E7 chord with G# in the bass (1st inversion).

E7/B means an E7 chord with B in the bass (2nd inversion).

E7/D means an E7 chord with D in the bass (3rd inversion).

This notation makes it easy to identify the inversion and the bass note at a glance, helping you structure your voicings effectively.
