Union Station and Washington, D.C.

A on-line program by William Wright presented 6-19-2020 to the National Railway Historical Society, Washington, D.C. Chapter, Inc. The program describes Washington’s grand terminal has been deeply connected to almost every aspect of life in the city – transportation, politics and government, urban design, economics, and social patterns — since its opening in 1907. Despite many changes in its operations, Union Station remains a building that reveals more about life in modern Washington than any other, simultaneously reflecting and shaping the development of the capital and, in many cases, the country. Bill, a graduate student in American history at Duke University and the University of North Carolina, has shared the station’s story through tours, articles and presentations, and a smartphone app that enables visitors to guide themselves through more than 100 years of the station’s rich and storied history.
