Recent art historical scholarship has increasingly approached imagery in the Neo-Assyrian period as participating in a complex, polysemic visual system that defies singular explanations of iconographical meaning. However, this widening of academic interpretation remains accompanied by hierarchical models of scale that can influence analyses of functional and visual interactions in Neo-Assyrian art. This presentation explores such interactions between cylinder seals and palace reliefs, while questioning the perceived status of palace reliefs in wider systems of art production of the time. I will specifically focus on mythological scenes of the monster Anzû from 9th and 8th century BCE cylinder seals and the lion hunt reliefs found in Ashurbanipal’s North Palace at Nineveh (7th century BCE). Through tracking the gestures and form of non-human actors in both examples, I intend to demonstrate a strategic choice by Ashurbanipal in adopting motifs popularized on earlier cylinder seals for particular lions on his reliefs. In establishing deep visual links between royal and mythological narratives, Ashurbanipal presents an image to viewers that activates multiple semiotic modes beyond the general understanding of an Assyrian king exercising order over his environment. As such, cylinder seals (and the imagery on them) are considered to be highly affective, both on and at the royal level of artistic production.
