The Death of Lawrence Welk as reported on The Lawrence Welk Show

When "America's Favorite Musicmaker" Lawrence Welk died in 1992, reruns of his show were still very popular on PBS. At the time, I was working in the promotions department of WUFT in Gainesville, FL. Nobody there cared about Welk but I was insistent that we make a little slide to air before his next show to pay tribute to him. Here is the way that show aired that Saturday night including the beautiful tribute that the Welk group put together. It was somehow comforting that right after that tribute the show went on, complete with the Welk fanfare, balloons and a tribute to Fred Astaire!
