Coronavirus: Fauci, Trump admin. officials testify to Congress as COVID-19 cases surge | FULL
Dr. Anthony Fauci and other Trump administration officials who oversee the government response to the coronavirus pandemic testified before a congressional oversight panel on Tuesday on how to effectively combat the spread of COVID-19 in the United States, as half of the states are seeing surges in cases.
Fauci said he is cautiously optimistic there will be a COVID-19 vaccine by the end of the year or early 2021, but warned that the next few weeks will be critical to tamping down coronavirus hot spots around the country.
He also said that neither he nor any members of the White House Coronavirus Task Force have been asked to slow down COVID-19 testing. The question arose after U.S. President Donald Trump said at a weekend political rally in Oklahoma that he'd asked his aides to slow down testing because it was turning up too many positive cases.
The U.S. has tested more than 27 million people, with about 2.3 million – or 8.4 per cent — testing positive.
“We’ve been hit badly,” Fauci said. He stated he was “really quite concerned” about rising community spread in some states. Arizona, Florida and Texas are among those seeing worrisome increases in cases.
“The next couple of weeks are going to be critical in our ability to address those surges,” he said.
The government’s top infectious disease expert testified along with the heads of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the Food and Drug Administration, and a top official at the Department of Health and Human Services.
