LA wildfires: Thousands forced to flee as firefighters battle Hughes Fire

Chief Anthony Marrone of the Los Angeles County Fire Dept. said on Wednesday that after battling the major fires that tore through Los Angeles just over two weeks ago, much of the people and equipment were still in place and ready to attack the Hughes Fire after it grew massively on Wednesday.

"The situation that we're in today is much different than the situation we were in 16 days ago. We have so many resources from Northern California, from the western United States, international resources, aircraft resources," Marrone said. It "really allows us to attack a fire like this," he added.

Meanwhile, residents wasted no time evacuating the area after seeing massive columns of smoke that "blocked out the sun."

"The community heeded that lesson [from previous fires] and allowed [the firefighters] to fight the fire," said Cal Fire Chief Joe Tyler.
