With the recent revelations that Saint Patrick had a wife whose name was Sheelah, I talk about the possibility of the revitalisation of her in Irish consciousness at a time when we very much need some balance between male and female energy in this country. The tradition of Sheelah appears to have emigrated from Ireland with the Great Famine. Folk beliefs about her can be found in Newfoundland and Canada. But according to Shane Lehane of UCC, she largely disappeared here, despite the fact that she had her own feast day, March 18th, the day after her husband Saint Patrick's day, which is today celebrated widely around the world. Mary McAleese's recent words about the misogyny of the Catholic Church are perhaps apt and timely in this discussion.
