Boris Johnson and Keir Starmer clash in savage PMQs row
Labour opposition leader Keir Starmer has offered to swap places with British Prime Minister Boris Johnson after the prime minister repeatedly questioned the Labour leader during a fiery PMQs, as he sought to deflect questioning on rising child poverty, the grim financial picture for councils, and the government’s recent propensity for U-turns.
"The government's had three U-turns in the last month," says Starmer, of immigration surcharges, MPs voting and free school meals. "The only question now is whether U-turns at the dispatch box - before or after. He argues about one brief one week and one the next, he's an expert in that.
"This isn't the only area where the government is falling short," he says, referencing government pledges to deliver for struggling local governments and asking: "Does the prime minister believe the government has kept that promise?"
Boris Johnson responds that the government has funnelled £3.2bn into local government, adding: "We didn't hear an answer. How can he talk about tackling the effect of coronavirus on the most disadvantaged kids, who need to go back to school, and it is those groups who are not going back to school, will he say that schools are safe to go back to?"
The Labour leader responds: "Mr Speaker this is turning into opposition's questions. If the prime minister wants to swap places I'm very happy, we can do it now."
He references the much-feared shortfall of funding facing councils, which council leaders say will not be met by the additional £3.2m.
