- PI Test - "PI" is short for Persistently Infected. When a calf is still in utero, the mother can pass a virus she may have, Bovine Viral Diarrhea or BVD for short, onto the calf. It can happen during a certain stage of pregnancy when the calf's immune system is still developing. As it is not fully developed, the immune system won't recognize the virus as a foreign entity and will not attempt to fight it off. There is no cure for a PI calf, so once it is born it will always be sick and eventually it will die. But the worst thing about this disease is that it can spread pathogens of BVD onto other calves. But a PI calf and its symptoms can be overlooked. So it is very important to test for this disease so we can cull the PI calf to prevent the rest of the herd from getting sick. To test the calf, we take a small notch out of its ear and use a snap test from IDEXX to determine whether it is a PI calf or not.
