The 21mb floptical floppy disk from 1991.
The 1991 released 21mb floppy disk variant. Of all the different variations of floppy disks that were ever created this one should have succeeded incredibly well but it did not. It was not marketed or advertised as much as the standard 1.44mb variant. It was also not manufactured or distributed by hundreds of manufacturers like the older standard 1.44mb floppy variant. One advantage was the fact that in 1991 there was not many choices regarding rewritable removable based data storage formats besides the standard 1.44mb variant, the 2.88mb floppy disk and the Bernuolli disk drives. The Bernuolli drives were much larger and were not as portable as the 21mb floptical disks which used the standard 3.5 inch form factor.
The popular Zip disk would not be released for another 3 years in 1994 so the 21mb floppy had a huge window for success which it unfortunately missed. This 21mb variant was used with mostly obscure Atari ST and Apple AT computers sold at the time. The very popular and successful IBM and Apple Macintosh computers were never sold with a built-in integrated 21mb floptical floppy drive which would have been a winning combination.
In this video I show you my collection of 21mb floptical media and drives made by 3M, iOmega, Insite Peripherals (I 325VM) and Valuestor. iOmega and Insite Peripherals worked together regarding the development and manufacturing of the 21mb floptical disk format. The Insite Peripherals company was headquartered in San Jose California along with the Valuestor and the Dysan company which manufactured some of the best floppy disks in the world. I own other collections of rare computer media and their drives which I plan to show and discuss in great detail in the near future. Enjoy.
