Training Firemen (1957)
Finchley, London.
M/S of a great red fire engine. Firemen start doing various jobs around the engine. M/S of the firemen getting water pump and hose ready. Huge fire engine ladder has been placed next to a building. M/S of a fireman starting climbing up the ladder. C/U shot of another fireman looking up. Terrible low angle shot of fireman's feet as he climbs. Ladder moves up which makes it even scarier. High angle M/S of the fireman on top of the ladder as it travels up. Cut to the firemen on the ground operating water pipe.
Water starts running and the fireman on top of the ladder directs it to the window. M/S of the firemen on the ground taking another ladder. Fireman starts running up the ladder. C/U shot of a senior fireman watching the operation. Cut to the window where fireman appears carrying something in his arms. M/S of the fireman coming down carrying (what appears to be) an unconscious man.
Succession of shots demonstrating two man hook ladder climbing technique. Cut to M/S of a man wearing 'self contained breathing apparatus' - a device looking like a gas mask with a few more gadgets and a little gas bottle. M/S of the fireman wearing the apparatus entering very smoky room through a tiny window. Voiceover claims that with this apparatus firemen can work for hours in smoky conditions. What about heat? L/S of a room full of firemen in the middle of their first aid drill. M/S of the two men demonstrating a new way of artificial respiration on the third man lying on the floor.
M/S of a fireman polishing brass - different parts of the fire engine and equipment. C/U shot of the man's hands polishing is followed by the C/U shot of the man's face. L/S of the firemen playing pool, relaxing. C/U shot of an alarm bell. It is ringing. Several shots showing firemen running, sliding down a pole, and getting into fire engine. L/S of the fire engine leaving the station and driving off.
