Does 4GB VRAM Still Work? (GTX 970, R9 290, R9 380 & 1050 Ti Tested)

Is 4GB of VRAM dead, or is ageing GPU architecture the real bottleneck? Today we are putting four legacy graphics cards to the test in modern, demanding titles like the Resident Evil 2 & 4 Remakes, Silent Hill 2 Remake, and Cyberpunk 2077 to see what a £35 budget actually buys you.

On paper, the flagship raw horsepower of the AMD R9 290 and Nvidia GTX 970 should comfortably dominate. However, real-world driver support, modern DX12 feature sets, and API compatibility paint a completely different picture when compared to the younger, lower-tier AMD R9 380 and Nvidia GTX 1050 Ti.

We also test the VRAM allocation myth by pushing texture sizes past the physical 4GB frame buffer to see exactly how much it impacts average FPS and 1% lows.
