How To: Care For Your Poinsettias

Here's how to care for your poinsettias this holiday season!
And P.S. at the end of the season you can compost your poinsettia or you can grow it as a nice sun loving indoor tropical plant. You can fertilize a few times in the spring, pot up and do some light pruning to shape it. They are actually quite lush looking plants on their own even without the bloom.

If you like a challenge, you can try to get your poinsettia to rebloom.

Pot up the plant into fresh soil and a slightly larger container in spring.
Move it outside for a summer vacation as soon as the weather allows. According to Michigan State University Extension, it is next to impossible to get it to rebloom unless it gets specific light requirements. An outdoor summer vacation where it gets good morning light at least, the more the better.

In mid-end of September you can begin the long night bright day light requirement. For 14 hours your plant can get no light…not even a brief oops moment. No light. Putting it under a cardboard box will work. For the next 10 hours give it bright light. A timer and grow light would be useful too. You will need to do this for 2 months. At the end of that time you will see the bracts begin to colour up. Like I said, a challenge, but pretty interesting if you are a horticulture geek like me!!
