Discussion Today - Asset Monetisation Strategy

On the show today, we will talk about the government’s asset monetization strategy. Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Tuesday that asset monetisation by the government should not be viewed only as a funding mechanism, but as an overall strategy for bringing about a paradigm shift in infrastructure augmentation and maintenance. Chairing a workshop with top officials of various infrastructure ministries, states and UTs, the Finance Minister stressed on the importance of asset monetisation as a critical financing option for enhancing infrastructure spending. She stressed the need for proactive and collaborative approach by the Central and state agencies for achieving the goals of the national asset monetization pipeline. Just days ago, PM Modi had set an ambitious asset monetisation target of Rs 2.5 lakh crore for the next three years. The PM had said through these reforms the government wants to ensure that public money is spent judiciously to benefit the poor, and not be used for PSUs and burden the economy. So what is the govt’s asset monetization strategy, how is the asset monetization drive going to be implemented and how will it help India realise its vision of a $5 trillion economy.
