ESE Spring Seminar #3, Feb 9, 2026, Steinhauser: "AI-Driven Data Centers & Demand Impact..."

TITLE: “AI-Driven Data Centers & Demand Impact: A Day on the ERCOT Grid”
SPEAKER: Jack Steinhauser, President, Hunter Stuart Energy Advisors, Inc.
ABSTRACT: The rapid expansion of AI & high-performance computing (HPC) is fundamentally transforming electricity demand patterns, particularly within the Electric Reliability Council of Texas (ERCOT) grid.
This presentation examines the critical intersection of the global energy transition & the burgeoning power demands of the AI revolution. It outlines the historical importance of energy in improving human quality of life while addressing the urgent "hidden cost" of fossil fuels: the global warming crisis driven by rising greenhouse gas levels.
The core of the discussion focuses on the rapid shift toward an "Electrotech" framework—characterized by solar & wind generation, electrification of demand (EVs and AI), and the intelligent use of battery storage to manage intermittency. Steinhauser highlights a major divergence in global energy policy: while China leads the world in clean energy mfg. & deployment, the U.S. has recently pivoted toward an "Energy Dominance" strategy that prioritizes the expansion of traditional fossil fuels & nuclear power to meet the massive infrastructure needs of AI.
A primary challenge identified is the "interconnection queue bottleneck," where data center developers face 5-to-7-year wait times for grid connections despite being able to build facilities in under two years. To solve this, the presentation advocates for Behind-the-Meter (BTM) Power Facilities. These collocated, "off-grid" microgrids—illustrated by the 7.65 GW Ranch project in West Texas—integrate natural gas, solar, and massive battery storage to provide the rapid, reliable, and high-density power required by modern AI-native data centers.
BIO: Jack Steinhauser is a dynamic energy industry leader with over 40 years of experience leading growth, innovation, and capital formation across traditional and renewable sectors. As a proven CEO and advisor, Jack excels in guiding companies through the low-carbon energy transition, from oil & gas exploration to renewable power generation including solar plus battery systems, waste-to-energy systems, hydrogen fueling infrastructure, and AI-driven technologies. His career highlights include raising more than $270 million in project financing, divesting $29 million in assets, and managing companies & crisis scenarios with strategic acumen.
Jack's executive tenure spans three publicly traded Canadian oil and gas firms, where he orchestrated over 50 exploration & development projects across North and South America, as well as Eastern Europe. As President and CEO of Sharon Energy Ltd. (1995–1999), he assembled drilling ventures and secured $25 million in joint venture funding for 176 wells across nine U.S. states. He later led Gold Point Energy Corporation (2005–2009) and Wind River Energy Corp. (2009–2011), raising C$14.1 million and C$10.5 million, respectively, while navigating public listings on the Toronto Venture Exchange & executing international business plans which included projects in South America and Eastern Europe.
In 2011, he founded Hunter Stuart Energy Advisors, a boutique firm specializing in oil and gas project finance, divestitures, & capital raising. Over 12 years, he delivered tailored investment proposals & structured deals that mobilized $167 million for upstream projects in the Rocky Mountain and Texas Gulf Coast regions, while facilitating asset sales in Oklahoma and Texas.
As an independent Energy Business Financial and AI Consultant since April 2024, Jack advises a diverse portfolio of six startups pioneering the clean energy frontier. At The Hoskinson Group, he is supporting the search for $684 million in financing for six pyrolytic gasification waste-to-energy projects in Hawaii and the Bahamas. For EnergiSynX, he is Architecting AI systems that optimize waste-to-energy plant designs through thermochemical modeling & machine learning. For Beacon Solar Construction, he developed a Shared Revenue Solar Equity finance model for solar-plus-storage virtual power plants in New England. Additional clients include Exergy Energy (grid-resilient backup power in ERCOT), Patriot Sustainable Fuels (UC Santa Cruz-licensed biodiesel), and BNG Clean Fuel Corp. (hydrogen fueling for zero-emission trucks). His contributions encompass business planning, capital formation, AI integration, and performance-based financial modeling to drive scalable, sustainable outcomes.
Jack's distinctive expertise in corporate finance, project mgt, & crisis leadership backed by a bachelor’s degree in Economics (Claremont McKenna College) and master’s degree in International Management (University of Denver) enables him to forge high-performance teams and navigate complex deals in legacy and emerging energy landscapes. A sought-after communicator, he builds enduring stakeholder relationships to unlock value and mitigate risks.
