What you've been missing (8K 360 video)
Can you see the Milky Way where you live?
80 percent of the world's human population live under skies that are impaired by light pollution, with one third being unable to see the Milky Way at all. Considering just Americans and Europeans, the number climbs to approximately 99% under impaired skies, with approximately 60% and 80% of Europeans and Americans respectively being able to see the Milky Way where they live.
One quick look at a dark sky map will tell you how bad this problem is. Most of China, India, and all of Japan is also affected by this. It makes sense that where the population centers of the world are, the night sky is all but gone.
I created this video from several clips I've filmed over the past few years while capturing the night sky in timelapse throughout the Western U.S. and Alaska. In each one, evidence of light pollution is present on the horizon, despite in some cases being more than 120 miles from the nearest significant source of artificial light (I label the source of each one in the video).
Ready to see what you're missing? This is a 360 video which, on a phone, allows you to pan around and change your view. Similarly, on a desktop, you should be able to do the same by dragging your screen around with a mouse. Looking for a more immersive experience? Viewing this in a headset is highly recommended.
