Between 1939 and 1945, Finland fought three separate wars — against the Soviet Union, alongside Germany, then against Germany itself. In the Winter War, outnumbered Finnish forces humiliated the Red Army for months. In the Continuation War, Finland fought alongside the Axis to reclaim lost territory. When Germany began losing, Finland negotiated a separate peace with Moscow and then drove German forces off Finnish soil in the Lapland War. Finland was never occupied, never surrendered, and emerged from the deadliest conflict in human history with its independence intact.
