Blackland Razors Dart

Blackland Razors (https://www.blacklandrazors.com/) is a US based razor maker most known for their Blackbird safety razor. This premium razor has a strong following in the wet shaving community. Recently, Blackland released their “budget friendly” Dart. The Dart aims to scale down the aggressiveness many experience with the Blackbird and offers a more affordable way of trying out a Blackland Razor offering. Blackland Razors offers a 30-day return policy for anyone who purchases a razor and isn’t in love with it.

The Dart is well built and will last longer than anyone who uses it. It is made from 303 stainless steel and the tolerance it is machined to are tight. The top cap features the blade posts which center the blade every time and the threaded screw is robust, allowing for a tight seat between the top cap and base plate. There are some machining and tool marks noticeable on the pieces of the razor, most specifically on the internal facing sides. It can be assumed that this lack of finish saves machining time and therefore helps reduce the cost to the consumer. The overall craftsmanship of this razor is excellent and stands firmly with any razor in the same pricing class.

The Dart, while billed as mid-aggressive, feels very aggressive to me on both my face and more so on my dome. The shave is close, albeit not always comfortable. It carries a narrow sweet spot, that is intuitive to find and maintain, but it does not feel as efficient as it is aggressive. When shaving, there is a lot of blade feel, which can be a good thing in order to keep you focused on the task, but it prohibits the “cruise control” shaves that I often desire on my head. I cannot see the majority of wet shavers adopting this as a daily driver, but I do see it having a following for those that shave a few times a week and are looking for something to mow down growth. The razor is well balance and weighs in at 99.5 grams, a familiar weight for stainless safety razors. It measures 92mm (3.62”) when full assembled.

The Dart is certainly a looker. It is much more aggressive though than I can comfortably use as a daily driver on my head. For US$ 99, this razor doesn’t have many equals in terms of built quality, design, looks and potential.
