"As Time Goes By": Recording of "California Dreamin'" - Richard Carpenter & Joe Osborn, January 1998
In 1998, a reworking of this early pre-Carpenters track "California Dreamin'" was underway for inclusion on "As Time Goes By", considered to be the Carpenters' final studio album.
On the original 4-track master, Karen is on drums, Richard on Wurlitzer electric piano & Bill Sisseyov on bass, all 'locked' into one track. Karen's lead is on its own track and the Chamberlin Music Master on another (which was intended to create a simulated "strings" effect).
For this project, all of the original instrumentation was replaced, starting with the bass line played by long-time Carpenters session bassist Joe Osborn. However, as one can hear, the original instrumentation is still intact during this preliminary stage of the process, giving a look into what the song originally sounded like.
*TRIVIA: Most of the Carpenters albums from 1972 onward have a credit listed that says "Special thanks to Ron Gorow". Ron was Richard's copyist, responsible for writing out all of the orchestration parts for the sessions. Ron is the gentleman in flannel sitting between Joe and Richard.
