Palo santo is a wood that is considered sacred. It is a tree that is found in South America and has energy properties, it is beneficial to purify rooms. The Incas use it in rituals and ceremonies. The aroma is sweet and intense and it repels insects.

Light it with a candle.
You will see black smoke coming out. This is normal. It is the surface of the wood burning.
Let it create a flame. And when I see that the piece has caught fire, I shake it vigorously until it starts releasing a white smoke.
That is the spiritual and cleansing white smoke of Palo Santo.
After a minute it will go out on its own.
Why won't Palo Santo stay lit?
If that happens to you... it's normal. The Palo Santo is wood and has great porosity. It will only stay lit for a while and then go out because it has so much oxygen and "empty space" inside.
Palo Santo is just like this. You light it, and it goes out. You re-light it, and it goes out. And so on... There's no special meaning behind it.
To keep palo santo burning longer, you can use charcoal disks and place your palo santo sticks on top, inside an ashtray. Be very careful.
