Nature’s Wisdom: Insights from the Python

Did you know that a python can consume prey as large as itself and then not eat again for months?

The organization Bioneers emphasizes a core insight: nature has already addressed many of the challenges we are still grappling with. Our task is to pay close attention and learn from these solutions. This is the essence of biomimicry—learning from the intelligence embedded in living systems.

Research teams from the University of Colorado Boulder, Stanford, and Baylor recently uncovered fascinating insights about pythons. After swallowing prey whole, a python's metabolism can accelerate an astonishing four thousandfold. Its heart expands by twenty-five percent, and its organs can double in size. And remarkably, after this intense digestive process, the snake may not eat for months.

What makes this extraordinary adaptability possible? It all comes down to a molecule called PTOS. When researchers administered PTOS to obese mice, they observed an impressive nine percent weight loss over twenty-eight days, without muscle loss or the nausea and gastrointestinal distress that often accompany treatments like GLP-1 drugs such as Ozempic.

PTOS already exists in human blood, though we do not produce it in the quantities pythons do. This isn't the first time we've looked to reptiles for inspiration; GLP-1 drugs themselves were developed based on compounds found in Gila monster venom.

Nature continually offers us guidance; we just need to be receptive to its lessons. Are there other examples of biomimicry that resonate with you? I would love to hear your thoughts in the comments below.
