India and Russia have signed the RELOS (Reciprocal Exchange of Logistics Support) Agreement, a military logistics pact that allows both countries to access each other’s ports, airbases, refuelling, repair, and supply facilities during joint exercises, training, and emergencies.
According to analysis by the Observer Research Foundation (ORF), this agreement is more technical than transformational, as India already has similar logistics arrangements with countries like the US, France, Japan, and Australia. However, the deal remains significant because a large portion of India’s defence platforms and systems are of Russian origin, making smoother logistics and maintenance crucial for operational readiness.
The RELOS agreement also signals continuity in India–Russia defence cooperation amid shifting global geopolitics and India’s strategy of maintaining strategic autonomy.
