He Sank 4 U-Boats Using Only Sound — Germany Put a Bounty on His Head
In the freezing darkness of the North Atlantic, one man sat hunched over a glowing dial, headphones pressed to his ears, listening for ghosts in the deep. Lieutenant Commander Donald Macintyre didn't need to see the enemy. He just needed to hear them — and when he did, they didn't come back up.
Armed with ASDIC, Britain's revolutionary acoustic detection system, Macintyre hunted U-boats with such lethal precision that the Kriegsmarine listed him by name as a priority target. He sank four submarines, captured the highest-scoring U-boat ace of the entire war, and helped turn the tide of a battle that Winston Churchill said frightened him more than anything else in the Second World War.
