"Dizzy Miss Lizzy" is a high-water mark of the 1950s rock and roll explosion, a frantic, piano-pounding masterpiece written and recorded by the legendary Larry Williams. Captured on February 19, 1958, at Radio Recorders in Hollywood, the track was born in the shadow of Little Richard’s "Good Golly Miss Molly." Williams, who had worked as Richard’s valet and protégé, mirrored that driving 12-bar blues structure but injected a harder, more rhythmic edge. While the song only reached number 69 on the pop charts, its DNA became a cornerstone of the British Invasion. The signature, piercing guitar riff was actually played by jazz session ace Howard Roberts, showing the strange overlap where sophisticated L.A. musicians helped build the "raw" sound of early rock. The song’s legacy was cemented by The Beatles, specifically John Lennon, who idolized Williams’ unhinged vocal delivery. The band famously chose "Dizzy Miss Lizzy" to close out their 1965 album Help!—a jarring, high-energy finale that famously followed the delicate acoustic balladry of "Yesterday." It was a significant moment in rock history, marking the final cover version the band ever included on a UK studio album of new material. From that point on, they moved into the purely original territory of Rubber Soul. Lennon loved the track so much he even resurrected it for his solo performance with the Plastic Ono Band at the 1969 Toronto Rock and Roll Revival. However, the exuberant energy of the music stands in dark contrast to Williams’ actual life. By the 1970s, he had largely abandoned the charts for the Los Angeles underworld, allegedly involving himself in drug dealing and pimping. This downward spiral ended in January 1980, when Williams was found dead from a gunshot wound to the head in his Laurel Canyon home. Though officially ruled a suicide, the "mysterious end" has been disputed for years by those who knew him, many believing it was a professional hit related to his business dealings. It’s a grim, noir finish to the life of a man who provided some of the most electric, joyful noise of the 20th century.
