Inside Wales' Best Kept Secret : The Hidden Chapel of Sir Gawain (St Govan)
On the trail of Sir Gawain. From a Pagan Hero to a Christian Saint?
We explore St Govan's Chapel in Wales, and follow the folklore surrounding it, from Celtic Christian wonder tales, to Arthurian Mythology.
St Govan was a Sixth Century Christian hermit who made a life for himself here at the ragged edge of Celtic Britain. He is associated with this tiny little chapel at the edge of the sea cliffs in Pembrokeshire, South Wales.
He is supposed to have built the original chapel (He is the patron saint of builders) from a hermit's cave. There are many wonder tales about his life here, including his miraculous escape from pirates, and that time angels battled pirates.
The place has also become entangled in Arthurian Mythology, in particular saint Govan is sometimes said to be Sir Gawain, who spent his last years here after the final battle.
Come with us on a walkabout, we will explore the cliffs and the chapel, and I will tell you the stories of Saint Govan, and of Sir Gawain.
