Pastors Are Asking Too Much From Their Congregation
How do churches get comfortable asking people for this much money?
In this video, we take a closer look at Laurona Phelps and the kind of church fundraising culture that has become far too normal in many ministries. When giving is presented with pressure, emotional intensity, spiritual language, and promises attached to it, the question has to be asked: are people being discipled in biblical generosity, or are they being conditioned to give beyond wisdom?

The Bible absolutely teaches giving. Christians should be generous, cheerful, and willing to support the work of ministry. But biblical giving is not supposed to be manipulated. Scripture says each person should give as they have decided in their heart, not reluctantly or under compulsion. That means pressure-based giving is not spiritual maturity — it is a problem.
Too often, churches create an atmosphere where people feel like saying “no” to a giving appeal is the same as saying “no” to God. They make people feel like their miracle, breakthrough, healing, protection, promotion, or next season is connected to whether they can release a certain amount of money in that moment. And when the requested amount is high, it becomes even more serious.
Because some people in the room are not wealthy.
Some people are behind on bills.
Some people are single parents.
Some people are living paycheck to paycheck.
Some people are unemployed.
Some people are already drowning in debt.
Some people are giving because they are scared to miss God.
And yet, in many church environments, those people are still being asked to stretch, sacrifice, sow, release, partner, pledge, or “trust God” with money they may not truly have.
That is not shepherding. That is dangerous.
